2.2           System Requirements - Software

For the installation of SQL Server 2016 Standard, one of the following operating systems is required:

·            Windows Server 2016 Standard, Datacenter or Essentials

·            Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, Datacenter, Essentials or Foundation

·            Windows Server 2012 Standard, Datacenter Essentials or Foundation

·            Windows 10 Home, Professional, Enterprise or Enterprise IoT

·            Windows 8.1, Pro or Enterprise

·            Windows 8, Pro or Enterprise

Beside the above-mentioned, common operating systems, further special versions of these operating systems are also supported. Should the version of your operating system not be listed above, please refer to the SQL Server 2016 User's Manual or the Microsoft Homepage to verify whether your operating system is supported.

Furthermore, the installation of SQL Server 2016 requires the .NET Framework 4.6 if Data Base Engine, Master Data Services or Replication are selected.  During the setup, it will automatically be installed together with the installation of the features. 

The .NET Framework may also be downloaded and installed manually from the website .NET Framework 4.6 (Web Installer) for Windows.

The installation of SQL Server Management Studio requires a separate setup. For this installation, .NET 4.6.1 is required; it will be installed automatically together with the installation of SQL Server Management Studio.
