Starting Engineering Base

After you have successfully installed the program, the Engineering Base icon is displayed on your desktop. Simply double-click the icon to start Engineering Base.

You can also start the program from the Start button on the taskbar.

To start Engineering Base using the Start button on the taskbar

  1. On the task bar, click the Start button, select Programs, click Engineering Base <EB version> and start Engineering Base <EB version>.
  2. This starts Engineering Base and opens the Introducing Engineering Base window.
  3. Follow the introduction carefully.
  4. After closing the introduction, the Engineering Base window is opened.
 

If the current user is not registered in an Engineering Base user group for Windows, then some features will not work correctly, like for example the export of worksheets to Excel and CSV. On starting Engineering Base, a message is issued indicating that you are not part of the local user group “Engineering Base”.

If you check Do not show this message in the future in the dialog of the messages, then the message will not be displayed again when starting next. In the Show Messages dialog below Tools/Options, the check mark is removed from Check the user group settings of the current user at system run.

It is possible to start up to five Engineering Base instances in parallel on a computer, a virtual machine or a remote desktop application. This allows you to proceed with your daily work while an export, import or print job is running in another instance. On starting more than five instances, a message is issued.

Please note the following:

  • All instances must use the same Engineering Base version.
  • For every Engineering Base instance, an individual Visio instance is started.
  • Every Engineering Base instance contains a unique process ID in the header of the Explorer and in Visio, e.g. #12345.
  • You can only work in one database.
  • An icon is shown in the task bar for each Engineering Base instance. If a worksheet or Visio is opened, another icon is shown.
  • To avoid any conflicts, you must assign a unique name for common files and directories (e.g. Log files, temporary files, etc.). For further information, please refer to EBDN.

Using multiple Engineering Base instances

  1. Start Engineering Base as usual.
  2. To start another instance, double-click the Engineering Base icon on your desktop.
  3. This starts another instance.
  4.  

    If you carry out any changes that require a restart, all Engineering Base instances must be closed and reopened to render the settings active.

    Copying and inserting objects between the different instances is not supported.

To quit Engineering Base

  1. On theFile menu, click Exit.
  2. This saves all open sheets and ends Engineering Base.
